VOICES THAT LISTEN
Instant Composition and Devised Performance
Instant Composition and Devised Performance
Over the past few years, Audrey and Andrés have been venturing out into the world of “Instant Composition”–improvising in front of live audiences with a creative sense of structure or direction. We seek to create something in the moment that leaves performers and spectators with a feeling of having experienced a complete piece.
In 2023, Audrey directed and Andrés accompanied the performance Voces que Escuchan (Voices that Listen) as part of the professional training program Voces Escénicas (Stage Voices), produced by Valentina Fuentes at the Parque Cultural de Valparaíso (see video at the top). In this piece, we explored moments of instant composition drawing from original text and improvising with invented language. We also devised soundscapes, characters, and movement, and experimented with proximity to the audience, placing them in our playing space and performing all around them. The same year Audrey and Andrés presented a duo at the Devised Theatre/Dance Theatre International Conference in Katowice, Poland.
On this page, you can also explore videos of presentations at our studio in Santiago alongside students from our pedagogic program (Gonzalo Lavanderos, Ana María Muñoz, and Carolina Solovera), as well as some fun with feet!
In our most recent instant composition laboratories, we have invited audience members to improvise with us, creating experiences that foster connection and courage. Our central question: How can we perform from a place of deep listening, present to our innermost need to voice AND make space to really take in what others feel called to express? Voices that Listen. This feels like a powerful direction that we want to explore further–cultivating the conditions for creativity to flow, witnessing and sharing each other’s lived experience on stage. So far, people seem to leave feeling seen and heard, a little lighter, a little taller, and genuinely touched by what they received. To be continued!
