ABOUT US

“Voice work isn’t only about developing talent.  To work with the voice is to embark on a fascinating path toward revealing who we are and what we uniquely have to offer the world.”

Rumbos is a community of performing artists and voice teachers directed by Audrey Pernell (USA) and Andrés Zará (CHILE).  Based in Santiago, Chile, we develop workshops and performances that explore the vast expressive and creative potential of the human voice.

In Spanish, the word “rumbo” means direction, path or way.  A core tenet of our work is that the voice wants to travel and to take us on a journey, leading us to different places–in our sound, in ourselves, and in the world.   Since 2009, we have collaborated with an intimate circle of international and interdisciplinary artists, as well as with diverse educational institutions in Chile and abroad.

AUDREY PERNELL

Voice Artist | Roy Hart Teacher | Bodyworker

Audrey is an innovative voice teacher with extensive experience as an actress, singer and bodyworker.  She is one of the only Roy Hart teachers in Latin America, and holds a master’s degree in Voice Performance and Pedagogy, a bachelor’s in Theater as well as professional certificates in massage therapy, vinyasa yoga, and yoga psychology.

After nearly a decade of classical voice training, she began her journey into Roy Hart work in 2003 as at Swarthmore College, seeking to explore her African American heritage and her «authentic» identity through her singing voice.  Under the primary mentorship of Jonathan Hart Makwaia and Linda Wise, she found a transformative path for working with the voice rooted in our human need to express, to listen and be heard with generosity.

Audrey’s in-depth research into the voice and performance has taken her from the United States to France, Turkey, Italy, and Chile, where for the last 10 years she has taught and performed in numerous universities and professional institutions, including Escuela Moderna de Música y Danza, Universidad Mayor, Universidad del Desarrollo, Universidad de Playa Ancha, Universidad de San Sebastián, and Universidad de Chile, among others.

Sought after for her unique balance of intuitive creativity with concrete and accessible tools, her teaching resonantes for diverse professionals from performing artists to teachers to therapists.  Together with Andrés Zará, she is the director of RUMBOS Voice Studio in Santiago.  She also shares her work at the Roy Hart International Arts Centre in France, various venues in Pennsylvania (her family home in the United States), and other corners of the world.

OUR STORY

Andrés Zará and Audrey Pernell met for the first time in New York in May 2009 while participating in a Voice Performance and Choreographic Theatre workshop with Enrique Pardo and Linda Wise, co-directors of Pantheatre and founding members of the Roy Hart Theatre (France). From the start, Andrés and Audrey shared a common need for a deeper vocal process, to face certain challenges that they couldn’t overcome through more conventional vocal techniques.

Inspired by their experience with Pantheatre, they decided to work together in Chile through Audrey’s master’s program in Voice Performance and Pedagogy, under the mentorship of Linda Wise and with the support of Annie Murath. They began to teach workshops together in voice, singing, and improvisation. For Audrey’s master’s thesis performance, they presented Concierto Rumbos, a project that they continued to refine in collaboration with various Chilean artists.  Since then, they have worked together on numerous projects, including the vocal quartet La Tromba, Encuentro Vocal, and the improvisation laboratory Improvistos Vocales, among others.  Audrey and Andrés continue to develop their artistic and pedagogic research with programs in Vocal Coaching and Roy Hart Work, combining creative exploration in their studio with cutting-edge online training.
